i can’t imagine how futuristic the first-ever airport must’ve felt, because certain airports - like the one i’m sitting in now, detroit metropolitan (DTW) - still feel like a slice of the future to me. it’s not even about the incredible feat of flying but rather the high-vaulted ceilings which create an otherworldly feeling (incidentally, they also remind me of pittsburgh’s steel bridges) and the ExpressTram which glides above the concourse like it’s grazing the sky. and then, of course, there’s my favorite part of this airport: the light tunnel. my favorite route through this tunnel is the “slow” way - meandering down the middle, avoiding the moving walkways so as to avoid the rush of travelers - and leaning towards the ambient, slightly dissonant music to which the lights are choreographed, a polka-dotted landscape of blurry colors and speculative dreams.
