How do you balance the need for originality with the need to build on the work of others?

Today we muse over the following:
Maybe that’s a question you’re asking yourself. But what if you don’t need to be original? Or is it that trying to be original is actually making you unoriginal? What if just trying to do you, is actually what makes your work original?
Then it doesn’t really matter how much you build on top of the work of others, cause by the random nature of how unique you are, you’ll—in no time—be making your own thing, even if you start off building on top of someone else’s stuff.
